The Marriott Long Wharf hotel building was completed
in 1982. It was designed to resemble a ship, with decks and a bow. To blend with nearby architecture, higher stories are set back, as to not
overwhelm the much older and shorter buildings on the wharf.
The design allowed for open views of the waterfront from nearby buildings; a
benevolent consideration for a downtown location, then as well as now.
Unlike many newer structures in Boston, this building succeeds in achieving
the goal of being architecturally pleasing. It was built on an extremely
expensive piece of property, and blends into the wharf from a height
perspective; rising the from the Custom House Block to the hotel to Marketplace Center
behind Quincy Market. The only drawback
is the shear walls if you are standing right next to the hotel, as the
building becomes more attractive from a distance.
Nearby attractions to the Long Wharf hotel include the
New England Aquarium,
Faneuil Hall, and
Quincy Market.
