Radio 92.9 Music Festival Expected to Draw Over 100,000 People
"The 15th annual EarthFest, sponsored by Radio 92.9,
will be held on May 24, 2008 at the Hatch Shell in Boston. Presented by
Whole Foods Market, EarthFest will take to the stage from Noon to 6:00 p.m.
featuring a stellar music line-up, a host of environmental activities
celebrating the earth, an interactive family area, a local music stage and
much, much more.
The Radio 92.9 EarthFest is the largest free radio
station concert in Boston. The event is produced in conjunction with the
Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. Past events have
drawn in excess of 100,000 people.
Musical talent for this year’s event will be announced in
mid-April.
In addition to great musical performances, the Radio 92.9
EarthFest will once again feature a family stage and activity area with
interactive programs and games for children. Drawing a large crowd last
year, the expanded family area will embody performances from family-friendly
acts as well as activities ranging from face painting to creating arts with
recycled materials. In addition, for the second straight year, a local music
stage will feature some of the rising music stars from the Greater Boston
area. The following is an excerpt of the entertainment line up:
CAKE
The alternative rock band CAKE formed in Sacramento, California in 1991. The
song "Rock and Roll Lifestyle” became the band’s first radio hit. Other CAKE
hits have included "The Distance", "Never There", "Sheep Go to Heaven", "No
Phone", "Short Skirt/Long Jacket", and an unconventional remake of Gloria
Gaynor’s disco classic "I Will Survive". The band is currently working on
their sixth studio album, scheduled for release in autumn 2008.
CRACKER
David Lowery and Johnny Hickman formed Cracker in 1991.17 years, 8 albums,
and 4 gold records later, the alternative rock band has enjoyed a longevity
possessed by few bands. Cracker’s most recent release, Greenland, was
released in 2006.
THE BODEANS
Formed in Waukesha, Wisconsin in the 1980’s by Kurt Neumann and Sammy
Llanas, The BoDeans are one of America’s premier roots-rock bands. Still,
released in March 2008, is the latest album from the BoDeans, produced by
Grammy-winning producer T-Bone Burnett.
THE ENGLISH BEAT
Hailing from Birmingham, England, The English Beat became one of the most
popular and influential bands of the British Ska movement. The English Beat
disbanded in 1983, after their third album, "Special Beat Service". Dave
Wakeling continues to tour as The English Beat with an amazing all-star ska
backing band playing the hits of The English Beat, General Public, and his
new songs.
STAGE CONTEST
For the second year in a row, the Radio 92.9 Earthfest will feature the
Boston Music Stage. The stage hosts the best local artists from Greater
Boston, one of the nation’s most vibrant music scenes. This year, Radio 92.9
has partnered with OurStage.com to find out who should play on the Boston
Music Stage. The top five local acts from the 929 EarthFest Channel on
OurStage.com will be awarded an opportunity to perform at Earthfest, with
the winning artist awarded an opportunity to perform on the main stage. For
more information, visit www.ourstage.com/go/929earthfest
KID'S PLANET – The Perfect Family Destination
In addition to the musical performances on the main stage, Earthfest will
also feature Kids’ Planet – an expanded interactive family area. The perfect
destination for families and kids of all ages, Kids’ Planet will feature a
stage with a wide variety of musical acts and entertainment, including a
headline performance from Ellis Paul, who released his first children’s CD
Dragonfly earlier this year. Other performers on the children’s stage
include Michael and Marisa and Zumix, a non-profit cultural organization
dedicated to building community through the arts. Zumix will feature
performances from three youth musical acts, including the Divercity Band,
the Zumix chorus and a classical guitar ensemble. Activities in Kids’ Planet
will begin at 10 a.m.
Entertaining and Environmental
In addition to the musical entertainment, the 2008 Radio 92.9 EarthFest is
committed to being environmentally sound and providing information about
environmental issues to all attendees. Radio 92.9 is working to ensure the
event is carbon-neutral, creating little impact on the environment. In
addition, Waste Management will be onsite throughout the duration of the
show, implementing a host of recycling initiatives.
More than 100 booths onsite will offer educational displays, exhibits and
food sampling. The booths will be staffed by event sponsors and local
environmental and non-profit organizations.
