A view of the obelisk that honors shipbuilder Donald
McKay. The monument is highly visible to ships as they enter Boston Inner
Harbor. Donald McKay constructed clipper ships across the harbor in East
Boston during the 1850s. A clipper ship is a sailing vessel with a long hollow
bow that reduces resistance in the ocean and increases speed. In
general, steam ships (long haul routes) and schooners (shorter hauls) made
clipper ships obsolete. |
