A view of the east face of Fort Independence on Castle Island. Castle Island is on the south side of Boston Harbor. At one time, Governor's Island and Fort Winthrop existed on the north side of the harbor (the island was cut-down and is now part of Logan Airport). Fort Independence and Fort Winthrop were formidable defenses that prevented enemy ships from bombarding Boston during the sailing era. |
