Hanover Street Looking Towards Scollay Square

Hanover Street, 1910s

A view of Hanover Street looking west. The arched building at the end of the street is the old Star Theatre in Scollay Square. Most of the buildings in the foreground were torn down for the 1950s Central Artery Expressway Project. In the above image, a huge green structure blocked the view of Scollay Square for about 50 years. In 2004, after the new Tip O'Neil Tunnel was opened which replaced the elevated highway, a park took its place and reconnected Hanover Street to Congress Street.
