The above photograph was taken in abandoned Court Street
Station in 1976.
The Blue Line was extended from Court
Street to Scollay Under, and then later Bowdoin. The Blue
Line extension was cut under Court Street Station, with its platform walls
remaining for many years. Please note when leaving State Street
westbound today, the tracks elevate significantly and then drop down into
Government Center, under the location where the old station was.
In 1976, looking east, a painted sign "Court Street" remained on the left wall, but had a
large hole in it from an old concrete excavation. There was also a painted
sign that said "Do Not Smoke Here." On the right side, was a sign "To
The Exit" with a hand pointing (photo above) to the stairway that led to
the entrance. The old platform walls were attached by a wide concrete
beam, and the Blue Line cars used to run visibly right under the abandoned
platforms. In 1976, there was a steel grate on Court Street that marked the spot where the kiosk was. I do not
believe the passage to old Scollay Upper still exists or was tiled over (on
the upper westbound platform there remains about 20 feet of the old
Adams Loop behind a door).
In the late 1980s, substantial work was done on the east end of Government
Center Under. The Court Street walls may have been built over or demolished at
that time.
