Origin Of "Scrod" Researched
The definition of
Scrod was originally a small cod, but eventually the preparation of
cooking was added to its definition.
06-Aug-2007 ? CelebrateBoston completed
research on the origin of the term "scrod." From newspaper
articles of the 1880s and 1890s, one can infer that scrod was
originally a small cod weighing less than 4 pounds. By 1900,
local chefs had added how the fish was prepared for cooking to the
definition. CelebrateBoston's Scrod
page describes the history of the famous Boston word.
The term "scrimpy" went into use in the English
language in the mid-1800s. Using conjecture, one could also infer that scrod was
originally a
combination of the words "scrimpy" and "cod," and
was used as slang by Boston fishermen.
