The Borden Family home, location of the famous double murder of
1892, is today a bed & breakfast hotel. Lizzie Borden was acquitted of charges that she brutally murdered her father Andrew Jackson Borden, and
her step-mother Abby Borden.
Daily tours of the house are available. The tour takes about one hour, and parental guidance
is suggested for pre-teens. Events on the day of the
brutal axe murders are described, with forensic photographs and other artifacts
available. Tour patrons walk in the steps of the first responders on the date
of the tragedy.
Overnight guests can spend the night in the actual family bedrooms,
including Lizzie's or her father's bedroom. Victorian style furniture and
decorations prevail throughout the house. The hotel greatly captures
Victorian period decor, and is like stepping back in time. Quoting part of
their
brochure:
"Overnight guests enjoy an extended tour of the home. The staff is well
versed in Borden lore and the history of the era. A full hot breakfast,
reminiscent of the meal served to the Bordens on the morning of the
murders is prepared and served by our staff. Evening snacks are served. An
online library of books and videos relating to the Borden family, the
murders, trial and aftermath are available to our guests." Other perks
for overnight guests are available, including greater access to the staff and their
extensive knowledge.
Visiting the location of such a famous crime can be quite exciting. The
feeling is that of approaching a haunted house in an old-fashioned amusement
park, except this house is a real place.
