A view looking north of what used to be known as Surface
Road or Surface Artery in Boston. Until 2003, a massive elevated roadway
known as the Central Artery stood here. On the left is the TD Banknorth Garden, and in the center
above is the Lenny Zakim Bridge. This photo was taken near where the
infamous u-turn underpass for Sumner Tunnel southbound traffic once existed.
Cars exiting the Sumner Tunnel could either travel north onto the old Central
Artery on-ramp, or briefly travel north down Cross Street, reverse direction
by going under the Central
Artery structure, and then drive up the southbound
on-ramp. Back then, from 7:00 to 9:00 each week day morning, a police
officer would actually stand in the middle of the rightmost southbound lane on the Central Artery structure, and stop
vehicles to allow the merging of tunnel traffic onto the artery. On a bad day,
without this officer in place, traffic could easily back up for miles, all
the way to Revere Massachusetts on the North Shore. |
