A view of the giant tea kettle at Scollay Square. The
"sign" was originally placed in front of the old Oriental Tea Company store in 1873. In
1875, a huge publicity stunt took place. More than 10,000 spectators filled Scollay Square and submitted guesses of the capacity of the tea pot. Eight
small boys and a tall man climbed out of the kettle to begin the famous
contest. Bucket after bucket was carefully measured and poured into
the kettle until its capacity was determined.... |
