Up In The Air
Boston Sneak Preview
December 1, 2009

The sneak preview of the movie Up In The Air, starring George Clooney, will take place on Tuesday December 1, 2009 (7:00 pm) at a theater in downtown Boston. The movie is about Ryan Bingham (Clooney), a corporate executive that travels around the United States with the function of terminating employees in a downsizing economy. Bingham works for a bean-counting consulting firm that is hired by companies that lack the courage to fire people within their own organizations.

The topic is dramatic and relative in today's economy. The Clooney character evolves from a stern corporate gun-for-hire with uncommitted personal relationships, to a multi-dimensional individual that is more sentimental. The question of course is how empathetic does Bingham eventually become, and does he reconcile the two worlds of corporate hatchet-man versus a reflective single middle-aged wanderer? We’ll have to see the movie of course to find out.

Coincidentally, this editor was a traveling auditor years ago, and can relate to Ryan Bingham's character. On the corporate side, one has to be empathetic but achieve the goals of the organization. On the personal side, one experiences great adventure by traveling around the country alone and discovering local attractions and cultural diversity. Many successes can be achieved as a traveling auditor in reality, both for management and employees. Wandering about the country though can create an addictive behavior to visit as many places as possible; one can only build up so many frequent flyer miles before traveling eventually becomes boring or arduous. What happens to Ryan Bingham?

The following is the tag line and synopsis of Up In The Air:

"Fasten Your Seat Belt First, Before Helping Others."

From Jason Reitman, the Oscar®-nominated director of Juno, comes Up in the Air, the timely odyssey of Ryan Bingham (Oscar® winner GEORGE CLOONEY), a corporate downsizer and consummate modern business traveler who, after years of staying happily airborne, suddenly finds himself ready to make a real connection.

Ryan has long been contented with his unencumbered lifestyle lived out across America in airports, hotels and rental cars. He can carry all he needs in one wheel-away case; he’s a pampered, elite member of every travel loyalty program in existence; and he’s close to attaining his lifetime goal of 10 million frequent flier milesand yet ... Ryan has nothing real to hold onto.

When he falls for a simpatico fellow traveler (VERA FARMIGA), Ryan's boss (JASON BATEMAN), inspired by a young, upstart efficiency expert (ANNA KENDRICK), threatens to permanently call him in from the road. Faced with the prospect, at once terrifying and exhilarating, of being grounded, Ryan begins to contemplate what it might actually mean to have a home.
