Old Orange Line Article Charlestown Bridge Elevated Structure

 

A view of Charlestown Bridge in about 1920. The bridge was constructed in 1899, and was designed to carry the elevated structure down its center. This elevated line eventually became the northern portion of the MBTA Orange Line, and was torn down in 1975. City Square is at the northern end of the bridge above, with the old Charlestown City Hall building on the left that was built before the neighborhood was annexed by the City of Boston.
